School of Rock track list

Ever heard a film soundtrack, wanted to buy something you hear three seconds of but been unable to identify it ?  This page is an attempt to provide a reference guide to the huge number of music tracks which appear in the film School of Rock.  It's not complete because I can't identify some of the tracks.  However, what I do know is here.  I hope it helps someone track down some music they like from the film.

I just gotta say that I was delighted at how good the choice of tracks was.  I was disappointed at a couple of absences and surprised at a couple that were there, but it could have been (read next word in Dewey Finn's voice) so much worse.  As someone who has been enjoying Rock music for the last thirty years, I went in expecting a nice American feelgood kids' film and ending up headbanging away there in the cinema, grinning fit to split my face in two.  The publicity materials suggest that Jack Black did most of the track selection.  Whoever it was, they have my thanks.

PS: Because I think it's the best thing in the entire film (Is there a way to say that without demeaning the script and acting ?  I don't mean to.), I've also put up a copy of the blackboard with the history of rock on it.  This is, needless to say, original artwork done for (though not actually shown in) the film and the property of ... well, whoever owns it.  Probably Paramount.  Please don't reproduce it without giving credit.
Simon Slavin

The tracks are listed here in the order they appear in the film in.  The two columns on the left list the last person to speak or do something identifiable, and what they did.

Fade out under credits.  That's it.  There're two songs credited which I didn't find, though:

Mouthful of Love
Young Heart Attack

Ride Into The Sun The Velvet Underground

Do you have any idea where these come in the film ?

If you can fill in any gaps or correct anything for me, I'd be grateful for an email to slavins@bigfraud.org with your information.  Thanks very much.

Late addition: I've seen this information around the net:

In the film, when the "groupies" approach Dewey at his desk to unveil the band's name they find him crooning a strange song and strumming his guitar. The song he is singing is the theme to the little known internet comedy series "COMPUTERMAN", starring Jack Black.

But I haven't been able to find a copy of the original to check. Can anyone verify or deny ?

Page history:

19th December 2006Thanks to Matt Clinch for pointing out that I identified Ride Into the Sun'incorrectly.
13th November 2006Thanks to Michele Celentano for pointing out that I had changed Rainbow to Deep Purple once but not noticed the other reference.
30th October 2006Thanks to Natasha Fiberesima for identifying Kurt Cobain with his hair flying.
5th April 2005Thanks to Domenico Galeotalanza for noticing that I'd somehow missed Pete Townshend off the list of guitarists. And I'd been complaining that there was no reference to The Who !
2nd April 2005Thanks to Carl D'Angio to correcting my 'Rainbow' to 'Deep Purple'. What was I thinking ?
